For a while (during the 2000's, 2010, and 2011), S&C seems to dominate the M&A league tables. Is its performance during 2012 an anomaly? Is it adjusting to an environment where there are fewer mega-deals?

There are fewer mega-deals going on (though this year the number of billion-dollar deals has been insane, and there are more in the pipeline). But S&C is also receiving increased competition from the likes of its peers, as well as "newcomers" into the high-value M&A space such as Kirkland and Paul Weiss. Davis Polk has had a crazy run this deal (Heinz, along with a host of other billion-dollar deals), and Kirkland too (Heinz, and a bunch of others I can't remember).
In short, the pie is getting smaller and there are more people who want a slice of it.
