Is the progression from alternate to offer possible... Or am I dead from the gate?

Just wondering, TYIA.

People on this board have gotten offers from lottery picks. I don't see why alternate would be any less possible.

Allegedly, people have gotten offers (eventually) by being greeters during OCI

This never happens. May as well not try at all during the interviews. It's standard firm policy to do some interviews "for the lulz."

Also known that partners love spending afternoons meeting neurotic law students. It brightens their day to see so many smiling faces that will never get hired.

Ok... My situation is that someone dropped and I converted the alternate to a screening interview... Will the interviewers know that I was originally an alternate?

Probably, but what difference does this make on your part?

I am a person who went alternate --> screener --> callback. It's definitely possible.

Yes, from personal experience. I also got a reject--lottery interview--CB--offer.
