Does BigLaw check references?

I'm seriously getting the feeling my public interest 1L supervisor REALLY doesn't like me. I haven't had any monumental screw ups, but how thoroughly do BigLaw firms check your references/past employers? I'd hate for my now past supervisor to hurt my chances over something I clearly never caught on to (I realize this sounds ridiculous, but at worst I did acceptable work and my supervisor was just always super stand off-ish).

Almost no one checks.

Covington checks references, I think.

My 1L summer employer/reference (a state judge) told me he got a call about me from my 2L employer (~V50 firm). You never know.

When do firms ask for references? or is this just them calling the people you list as previous employers?

SA at V50. Firm asked for 2 references; both were checked by a third party who also contacted my past employers.

Guess I'm lucky, my 2L year I had double digit firm offers and no one asked for a reference. All the firms were Vault 100 firms but none of them were in New York so maybe that's why. I don't even remember anybody asking for references. When do they normally ask for this?

Only interviews I have with references required are Covington DC and Arnold and Porter DC.

Munger asks for and checks on references post-callback. I think Covington checks on references to determine who to give callbacks too.

Paul, Weiss called my 1L firm and asked if I had received an offer.

My V25 hired a third party to conduct a background check. I think they called two previous employers to confirm my work, because they bothered me about not being to reach those previous employers immediately.

Paul Weiss checked my references.
