What do you do?

I'm clerking for a year before joining my firm. I'm in a small market. My clerkship is likely not going to start until mid-September. I don't want to just sit on my ass. Cash flow is not strictly a concern but my fiance is starting school soon anyways so it's not like we can just go a cross-country road trip. And I'd like to be making money.

Here are my options the way I see them...
-Call my firm up and see if they're swamped and would like to have me for ~4 weeks
-Call the DA's office I worked at during 3L and see if they could use some help
-Legal aid?

I haven't looked up the fine details of my state's 3rd year practice rule, but I assume at this point I'm basically the equivalent of a 2L.

Anyone have any suggestions? Cash would be nice, but something cool or interesting I could put on my resume would also work.

I would not do any legal work outside of your firm without their explicit approval. You don't want to raise any conflicts issues.

I'd relax, work out, whatever. Won't have much time for it after you start.

Yeah, I know. It's just not an option for me because I don't have the $$$ and I'm not going to tell my fiance "see ya" and head out.

I think I might try to get my clerkship start date moved up.

If you're not hurting for money, just sit on your ass and do nothing. Enjoy what is likely to be the last stress free time in your life.

I have already started doing both of these thinks and plan to continue for the next month or so until my clerkship starts. I hope to balance it out with the physical activity that has been severely lacking in my life for the past two months. Its like the calm before the storm, just chill and enjoy it.

Have fun. You might have one last chance to do something like this (between end of clerkship and firm start date) but it's certainly not an opportunity that will come up very often again. Yeah, sitting on your ass can get old after a few days so find something you can do around the area. But I wouldn't start working. You'll be doing enough of that your next 50 years or whatever.

All of the above are correct. Just hang out with your friends, go on vacation, etc. You will be busy enough while clerking and will have more than enough work once you start your post-clerkship job.
