Critique my Bid List - GULC Transfer

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Jul 14, 2013 8:11 pm

Honest and brutal advice needed. TT to GULC transfer. 3.58, which is about top 15%. SF/SV is my target market (hometown), but am expanding to NYC and Chicago (where my 1L school is) because of larger class sizes. Bidlist was created based on a formula of things I care about: 1) in or has an office in SF/SV, 2) SA class size, 3) # of interview slots, 4) historical GPA median (does not include transfer students, because OCS has no data on that). This is what the formula spit out. It's not the most error-proof formula obviously, in large part because some data is just not available so I had to guess and/or just leave that data point blank. Unfortunately, the result is that there are some super selective firms on this list, so this is just a starting point.

Please critique and tell me what to change. I seriously have no fucking idea what I'm doing!

Seems like you are being damn aggressive. Do a lot of those firms ever hire median GULC students?

And what is with the multiple offices? I don't go to GULC, but my career services said not to bid multiple offices unless you have a damn good reason you want to be in either.

Seems like you are just aggressively throwing darts. Obviously big class sizes are good, but you have to have the grades to get in the door. Have you talked to your CSO?

OP, you cite your 3.58, but just so I understand, that GPA was earned at your transferor school, right? Shouldn't you be approaching this as if you were a median student at GULC?

If Yes, then I agree with TJ that you're being really aggressive by bidding really good firms like Weil, Paul Weiss, Gibson Dunn (I'm only addressing NYC which is the only market I know about).

OP here: Yes, it's 3.58 at my 1L school. GULC OCS said I should look at it as a 3.4 there.

And yes, I definitely know it's aggressive, which is why I need the feedback. This is just what my little self-designed formula spit out, so it's my first pass at putting together a bidlist based on that. But I know there are some firms that I should not even so much as consider. I'll definitely go ahead and take Weil, Paul Weiss, and Gibson Dunn out. Any other suggestions?

With regard to multiple offices, one of the factors in my formula is whether the office is in or has an office in SF/SV (just trying to think one step ahead - maybe consider transferring back home a couple years into it), so the list came out very grouped as far as firms as concerned. Is bidding multiple offices not okay? Would it give me a better chance at getting a screener with that firm, and then I can specify at the screener which office I'm looking for?

Any other words of wisdom for me? Firms I should move up or down? Firms I should move in or out of the Top 50?

Way too agressive. Consider your GPA to be .3 lower than it is. of you transferred fromm TTTT pretty much forget it. only target one market where you have string ties. LOL re Davis Polk. good luck though.

I have 3.4. Your list for NYC is nothing less then crazy. Davis Polk, Weil, Paul Weiss, Gibson Dunn, Kirkland, Simpson, Skadden, are you kidding me Craveth and Cleary, Sullivan. You have legit NOO shot. Jones day, Milbank, Sherman, white and case are your reach firms. Im nervous about these firms and I have some high level contacts ie I just had lunch with the hiring partner at one. I just named like 20 firms on your list just from NYC that aren't really reasonable. Adjust your list. GULC is a good school but it's not Harvard

This is true. Cut yourself down like 10 notches. Not to mention you will not be as competitive as a native GULC student...they will only look at old school. Sorry to be harsh, but you are going to fuck yourself and are leading with your chin right now.

Thanks, all. Like I said, brutal is what I need. And like I said, I didn't even look at the firm names - this is purely based on a formula of factors I care about and this is a starting point. Advice like this is exactly what I need.

Any other suggestions on which ones to take off and add on?

All the ones I listed in the first line take off no questions asked unless your dad is a client or something extraordinary. The second list I have if you really are equal to a 3.4 which I think is way too optimistic, you can leave them but order them accordingly as reaches. Go to the gpa list and anything with a 3.2 to 3.4 add those firms. You need to do some real research or your gonna be steamrolled at a 3.4 I know I'm no where near big law secure but I got a chance if I'm smart and you may be in the same boat.
