Who out there is applying for 2014 summer associate positions at Jersey firms? Let's get some collective knowledge in this thread.

Also, since there are likely to be many Anons, I'm recommending we use code names.

McCarter English: Doesn't have an SA program
Norris McLaughlin & Marcus: Not hiring SAs for 2014
Ogletree (Morristown): Not reviewing applications for 2014 SAs
Patton Boggs (Newark): Is "not accepting resumes for the 2014 Summer Program"
Porzio, Bromberg and Newman: Does "not plan to interview second year students this year"
Preti Flaherty (Bedminster): No SAs
Proskauer Rose (Newark): SA hiring limited to labor law
Riker Danzig: Accepting resumes
White and Williams (Paramus): No SAs

Applying to north jersey firms.

Proskauer Newark apparently is only hiring in construction (or something like that- I wasn't paying attention so I don't remember exactly)

When I get a chance, I'll provide my list, but a lot of jersey firms stopped doing summer programs, and exclusively hire state clerks or laterals

My spouse currently works at one of the "big" NJ firms and pulling down a first year associate position absent a clerkship in the Appellate Division/NJ Supreme Court and or neighboring federal courts is very difficult. Firms that stick to the traditional hiring model (Lowenstein/MDMC) still exist, but they really poach from the top of the top from the local schools and applicants from higher ranked schools with demonstrable ties to New Jersey. I really would anticipate a general lack of getting anything substantive from these firms unless you are planning to clerk for one of the above after which the chances seem far greater. The New Jersey legal market is one of the most insular in the nation and approaching employment there as a viable commute option from New York (unless you have sterling credentials from the top schools) is not going to produce the results you might be anticipating.

No longer a current student, but here are the NJ firms I interviewed with a few years ago. Of course, not all are hiring, but at least it will give you some additional firms to target, if you aren't already. I did interviews with:

Prozio Bromberg
Sills Cummis & Gross
Patton Boggs
Bressler Amery & Ross

I think my Pepper Hamilton interview was technically for the Princeton office, even though the interview was conducted in Philly.

K&L Gates has no SAs in Newark
Kelley Drye has no SAs in Parsippany
Lerner David is IP only
Norris McLaughlin doesn't appear to be hiring SAs or first year attorneys

Proskauer Newark (Employment only)
Patton Boggs (Environmental Defense only)
Lerner David (IP only)

These are firms that I know used to have summer programs but don't anymore:

Most of the BigLaw outposts (i.e. K&L Gates, Latham, Ballard Spahr, etc.) only have small NJ offices and have never taken SA's. I think there are some other smaller/mid-sized firms that hire SA's, but you'll probably have to dig for them because they're non-NALP. And most of them hire out of NJ clerkships (although from my experience, it's not limited to Appellate Supreme, but that will depend on your credentials and your judge).

It's working fine for me. May have been temporary. That being said, Day Pitney's application page isn't working for me (won't upload docs). Will be calling later today to find out what the story is - great excuse for a call

Is anyone else having technical difficulties with all of the firms that use LawCruit? It won't let me upload docs. Is that what you were using, shore?

Maybe, but a better bet is to get a Jersey state clerkship.
It seems that Jersey firms more and more are eschewing SAs in favor of taking attorneys who've already gotten some experience.

When I get a chance, I'll look it up, but at least one firm coming to my OCI is interviewing 3Ls

Curious if doing two different SAs (one as a 1L and one as a 2L) would give me some leverage. I'm looking to move back home if possible if I don't or can't stick where I am at now.

Legitimate work experience since all I did was substantive legal work at both firms I summered at.

It can't hurt to apply, but from my experience, they want post-clerkships and laterals. Your best bet is to get on App. Div./NJ Supreme (and Law Div. assignment judges) applications.

ETA: If you've had 1L/2L SA's, definitely apply to Supreme. They pay close to federal clerkship rates and you shouldn't have a problem getting a place like Lowenstein or McCarter English afterwards; although I can see with your SA's one of the two potentially biting now.

Lowenstein is a better bet than McCarter
