1L summer salary relevant for financial aid?

So my financial aid office is asking me salary for the summer. My question is - why is this relevant if its not on my tax returns (obviously), and will it affect my financial aid award? Is this normal for the financial aid office to inquire about this? I most definitely do not want that money to go to tuition but to put in savings (because I currently have none). What should I do? I am really worried that it will cut back my financial aid award and I don't want that to happen. I expect to earn around ~5,000, after paying rent and everything.

Are you getting need-based aid? If so, it seems relevant to me because less need. If only merit aid, I'd ask them why they need and how they intend to use that information. No matter what it shouldn't affect your loan eligibility...unless its paid by the school and you fall under some weird work/study rules or something.

Yep, and it should. What do you think need based financial aid is for.
