How To Make A Tie
I struggle with this, and am trying to learn over the summer. I never learned how to make a tie, and always had people do it for me whenever I needed one. It's embarrassing, and I am going to need to make one every day. I just never had anyone teach me how to growing up, and then never learned on my own.
Contrary to how this sounds, I'm pretty put together. I have always struggled with the fine motor aspects of things. For instance, it took me until fourth grade to learn how to tie my shoes.
I have tried the youtube videos, but they don't help. Does anyone have any advice? Are there teachers for this who I could pay? I would also be willing to pay for instruction over skype.

When I make a tie, I usually require a pretty industrial loom, but I suppose you could make one by hand with a needle and thread if you really want to be fancy about it. Depends on whether you want to use silk or not.

It's not that hard. Although if you can't figure out how to tie a tie from youtube videos, I'm not sure if the above linked diagram will do much good...

Don't laugh. They taught us with this story at my school when I was a kid.

I think the Pratt is the easiest to tie and looks as good as (if not better than) the more standard half windsor.
Try that?
Try that?

You could probably walk into any nice men's clothing store, like Brooks Brothers, and have a salesperson show you, especially if you also bought a tie. But online diagrams have always worked for me. Are you having trouble tying the tie or having trouble tying it well? It's pretty easy to succeed in tying a tie, but most guys don't do a very good job.

That's a good idea. If I went in when it was empty, and promised to buy a tie if he taught me, that'd probably work.Bronte wrote:You could probably walk into any nice men's clothing store, like Brooks Brothers, and have a salesperson show you, especially if you also bought a tie. Re: How To Make A Tie
Youtube, diagrams, and practice are the best ways to go about learning. The half-windsor is a good knot for almost any tie. The Four-in-Hand is the easiest knot to learn, but doesn't work as well with really thin material ties (ends up too small).
And keep this in mind:
Tie knots allow the tie to slide up and down on the narrow end. You can always slide it down far enough to take it off over your head. Eventually the knot will end up looking bad though and you'll wreck your tie if you leave it tied all the time... but until you're competent, you could keep a couple ties tied and just rotate them out.
... and if for some reason you find you're totally incapable of tying a tie, there's always the Zipper Tie: http://www.thesilktiefactory.com/zipperties9.html

Since when is anonymous posting appropriate for the fashion-challenged?
