For big and mid-size law firms that hire for the spring, when would they usually conduct the interviewing process and make an offer?

2L? 3L?

I don't really know what you're asking

For a 3L. I'm a 2L now and submitted a resume hoping for a position in the fall and they said they werent hiring for the fall but might have something in the spring. They have my resume, but I'm trying to determine the best time to provide them with an updated resume for the spring position so they consider my resume again.

A position for during the school year or for after graduation?

It's for the Spring, so during the school year. But I'm assuming if they are hiring a 3L in the Spring there would be some intention of hiring them after graduation, but I don't think that's a guarantee or anything.

yeah don't assume that. Many firms don't ever intend to hire their school year law clerks, at least before you've worked there. They might be impressed and then want to hire you, but its unlikely they have the expectation that they're hiring someone they plan to make a real offer to.

To answer your question, they will interview when they have a need. They won't do it many months in advance or anything like that. If they do, that's out of the ordinary for school year law clerk hiring.
