2l summer split?
Is it realistic to split the summer between firms (one in NYC and one home)? Or is this a bad idea / impossible?

Re: 2l summer split?
For most NYC firms probably not, and I would be hesitant to do it (exception: you have a 1L SA that wants like 2 weeks in 2L summer and you do the entirety of the NYC firm program too).
Don't rock the boat; you will look uncommitted
The only markets where splits are the norm are non-FL southern markers.

I know a bunch of people who have split. Rules regarding this are firm not market specific. Cross that bridge when you get there.

Also, just because a firm says they allow splitting does not mean they like it. If you really want to do this, some firms allow splits in between offices. For example, Dechert allows a Philly/NY split, and I know they are not the only ones that do that.

Thanks for the info, particularly about office splitting with the same firm. I will cross that bridge when I come to it, but it is good to know it may be an option.

Yes. Though the amount of weeks vary (and some firms expressly do not allow their 1L SAs to come back as 2L SAs).mephistopheles wrote:rad lulz wrote:you have a 1L SA that wants like 2 weeks in 2L summer

A firm I am going to this summer requires me to come back for at least 4 weeks next summer* (I dont think 2 weeks is realistic).mephistopheles wrote:Anonymous User wrote:Yes. Re: 2l summer split?
Most people I know who successfully split did so in one of the following ways:
(1) Super-elite people who split between two super-elite firms (either DC biglaw and DC boutique or DC biglaw and biglaw in some other market)
(2) People who went back to their 1L firm for 2-4 weeks
(3) People who split between 2 offices of the same firm
(4) People who split between a firm and a nonprofit/government employer
(5) People who split in markets where it's common to split
I don't know a ton of people who did the "I can't decide, so I'll do both firms" split, and I imagine that's probably the path that's most fraught with danger.
