Does it look questionable for me to take a state trial judicial internship my 1L summer if I eventually am looking to go into soft IP?

Nothing you do your 1L summer matters, really. It can only help - it rarely ever hurts. Don't overthink it.

OP here- thanks for the advice. I applied for a few IP things, but they're mostly inhouse competitive things that I would love to have, but doubt I will. I threw out some state trial judge apps a few weeks back and now have an interview with a state trial clerk this week. Not thrilled about it, but it's safe, right?

It's safe. No employer expects a 1L summer job that is relevant. Nice bonus, but no detraction. Again - stop overthinking it.
