Picking a later start date.

Is it bad to pick a later start date for first year? (near beginning of Nov.).

Agree that it doesn't matter. If it were end of Nov, or Dec, I'd be a bit more hesitant only because firm work often slows during that time and good initial projects might be harder to come by. But generally, what you get staffed on is often just luck of the draw.

The firm I worked at before LS (small, about 50 attorneys) let you start right up if you wanted while studying for the bar. Do most firms not do this? It doesnt seem like it would be the best idea in any case...

Not sure what you mean. Working while studying for the bar is a dumb idea unless you absolutely need the money/you are at a small firm that basically requires it.
Take as much time off between the bar and starting at the firm as you are allowed/can afford. It will be the last time you really get off until you quit firm life. Everyone at the firm knows it and won't hold it against you.
