1L Summer Military Training

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Mar 04, 2013 2:46 am

Would joining the reserves while in law school cause problems for career prospects? I was planning on joining the reserves this coming year but the requirement is that I go through basic training (10 weeks) during the summer, which would be my 1L summer. Would doing that instead of a 1L legal internship or job really cause problems when it came to the 2L SA or later job applications?

Are you signing up for RTOC or just straight up reserves? Also are you going enlisted or officer? If your doing ROTC then you will be going to LDAC during your 2L summer at Ft Lewis (for Army), this will of course prevent pretty much any other employment or internships. If your simply joining the reserves though as an officer or enlisted, then I would strongly recommend you wait until after school. Once your in basic your on active duty orders and there is no guarantee that these will line up perfectly with your academic calender. Also, you may be injured or such at basic and be recycled into the next incoming basic training group. This could add on time to your training and push you past the start of your fall semester. If your really interested in joining the military go talk to an ROTC counselor on your campus.
