can't offer you 1L position, but interview with us again?

If the rejection letter says "we can't offer you 1L callback because of the limited seats available.... but we do invite you to come to fall OCI and talk with us for 2L summer associate positions," does that mean they like you? Or is just a form letter for all 1L summer applicants?

That's boilerplate.

It's boilerplate, but just because you get turned down or a 1L spot doesn't mean that you won't get a 2L spot at that firm.

I have a 1L rejection letter and a 2L offer letter from my firm. Also, be on the lookout for rejection letters that ask you to "keep in touch" over the summer with someone specific, or ask you to send in 2L application stuff pre-OCI. That can make a difference.

Have had 3 NYC firms set up CB's for 2L pre-OCI and 2 NYC firms just say, "Thanks for coming in. hope you bid on us in the fall" FWIW

I bind them together and made them into a book. I later gave it to my family to show friends' kids who want to go to law school that it is not going to be an easy path.

Truth. I've actually had a firm contact me asking why I didn't reapply as 2L.

They probably say that to everyone, but it's not so bad. They wouldn't bring you in for an interview if they weren't interested in you. A hiring partner started off my interview saying "The summer program is for 2Ls. We can hire maybe two 1Ls, so don't be discouraged if you don't get an offer. We do these 1L interviews as part of a long-term relationship building process."

But seriously, spent last night talking with a friend who's just like I had to apply to 60 places before I landed something, so keep reaching out . . . and it's like, I have probably 500 rejection letters from firms saved up (seriously, I'm a masochist and I saved them) between 1L and 2L. Is 500 more than 60?
