Small Firm Summer Employment

1) Are small firms required to pay 1L summer associates?
2) Will taking a 1L summer job in a market you don't intend to work in after graduation scare employers during on-campus interviews?

2. You need to be able to explain it but grades will matter much more.

Yes, if it's for-profit then it has to pay the interns (they probs won't call you a summer associate, more likely a law clerk). Normally the pay is hourly.
It might if you're looking for post-graduate work in a city you have no ties to other than school. No one believed I was sincere about wanting to work in Boston after spending 25 years in Ohio. Don't know how much a summer in Boston would've helped, though.
