So, I'm currently a 3L at a mid-T14. I will be clerking in an east coast district for one year and then going to a NYC firm. I'm more interested in working in DC than in NY, but I have already accepted my offer and for reasons I'd rather not elaborate upon, I would strongly prefer not to renege on the NY offer. I don't mind working in NY for a few years. If after 2-3 years at my firm I am interested in lateraling to a DC firm, does anyone have some idea about the likelihood of success? What if I am interested in regulatory work but I have limited opportunity to do this at the NY firm? Would I be better off biting the bullet and trying to jump to a DC firm while I'm clerking?

For those who may think it's relevant, I am around top 5-10% at my school, E-Board of secondary journal, and I don't have strong "ties" to DC, although I worked there for a short time. I am also interested in working bigfed later on, but at this point I'm more interested in knowing if anyone has useful information to share about the lateral process in a situation like this.

You are likely to have a lot of opportunities. I interviewed with lots of DC attorneys who had started their career in NYC back in my day.

I even knew a DC federal judge once who suggested people start their legal careers in NYC as opposed to DC, since that was the "big leagues."
