Does your school's career services have any rules re: not saying no to judges?

Normally, I would say to spend your 1L summer where you want to work your 2L summer and after graduation. But this is an easy call: choose California. New York rent for a summer will sent you back, at least, a few thousand. You are working an unpaid job. Save your money and live at home. And having ties with the market is not important at all for NYC. What you do your 1L summer is not important, so don't spend thousands of dollars unnecessarily.

What? It's perfectly reasonable to do so. Especially if it's going to cost you thousands in rent versus living for free at home. I think a judge would understand. An internship is not a clerkship.
