How to shop around an offer

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Jan 08, 2013 8:15 pm

Hello y'all. I got a permanent job offer and I'm excited about it in and of itself. However, I want to keep my options open and there are a few places that I may like to work too. I have previous contacts with these places. How should I go about telling them about my good news and seeing if I could parlay this offer into another offer from them? Honestly, I don't want to sound aspie while doing it, so you may need to give me some pointers on how to start the conversation. Thanks very much.

If you need more details from me, I'd be happy to give you as many as possible without revealing my identity.

Well I don't exactly know from first hand experience, as my offers came during OCI where everyone knew offers were floating around, but why not cut to the chase?

"Hey, long time no see! Listen, I just got a job offer from X that I'm really excited about, but I wanted to be sure I explored every available option. Is your firm hiring? I'd be happy to submit my resume and come in for an interview."

You're a product, market. Don't be shy. If the answer is no, well then, "ok, thanks anyway. Let's do lunch sometime...". And if it's yes, great!
