Admin Law and Government Jobs

Is Admin Law necessary to apply as a 3L for jobs in government (think of OCC etc).

I absolutely hate the class and I already have a very busy schedule. I am also a 2L... On the other hand, I am trying to make myself as marketable as possible for the 3L job search.

I don't think any class is make/break (I am a federal clerk and I never took Federal Courts) - nowhere near as important as your grades and connections. That said, I have found Admin really helpful, and if you're applying to work for an agency, I think it's a really good basic to have. (I am also the rare person who actually liked Admin, though - most people I know find it excruciating.)

In a similar boat, but I'm holding off on Admin until Fall of 3L. I figure it'll be fine to include in my cover letter that I'm taking it when I'm applying.

Admin law is essential and pretty much untaught in a law school class on admin law. EPA rulemaking looks nothing like SEC rulemaking, OCC enforcement actions don't look like FTC administrative proceedings and even SSA hearings are incomparable to EOIR hearings. That's without touching the esoteric kinds of admin law like OIGs, fiscal law, OSC/OGE, ACUS, etc. Talk to some people in agencies you'd want to work for or with and then take classes in that area of law (but you'll probably have to take admin law anyway to convince people you're serious).

So in your opinion, it is necessary to take it as a 2L for the 3L gov. job search?

I screen/interview for our Honors Program. We don't reject anyone for NOT taking it, but it is considered a plus. On one recommendation, I noted that although the applicant didn't have the most experience or coursework in our subject area, he showed dedication to federal service by taking admin law and having more rulemaking experience than others.

Yes, that should be sufficient. On a practical side, if you really want to work for a federal agency (especially a regulatory one) you should really take admin law since we're all bound by FOIA and APA.

Also, I don't think any students need to post anon on this thread.
