Specific Practice Area SA--asking for change

So, back in August/September/October/November, I landed an SA through Symplicity with a V50 firm in a major market. The listing & interview process were for a specific practice area in which I have experience, but in which I'm not particularly interested--I took the position mostly b/c I was desperate. I am pretty sure I'm the only SA hired for the practice group.
However, now that I've had a bit more school, I'm interested in a separate, discrete practice area that has nothing to do with the practice group for which I interviewed/was hired. I figure I shouldn't ask to switch altogether, but is it possible to ask to split between the practice areas? The firm generally lets people pick a couple different areas for SA's, but I feel my case might be a bit different because I was hired based on specific need. The caveat is that I've seen a Symplicity posting from the firm for the exact practice area I'm now interested in, so I'd presumably be filling an area of need either way (of course, I'm not sure how to say: "Hey, I was still looking at Symplicity after I accepted your offer and noticed this opening!").
Thoughts on how to approach this? If I don't find a different practice area now, I have a feeling I'll try to find something during 3L OCI/massmail. If they let me switch practice areas, I'm likely to stay but may still look around during 3L OCI. FWIW, I have solid school/GPA/extracurricular credentials, so I don't think the other practice area would look down on my materials. I have about as realistic, but still minimal, shot as one can have for 3L positions. TYIA!
