Sending an attorney an email

So I found someone who works in a Houston office that went to the same UG as me (one in TX) and the same lower T14 as me. I know this firm does 1L SA positions as I am friends with a 2L who had one last year and a buddy at UT law was told to apply. Would it be okay to email this attorney? If so what should I say? I think it is pretty cool that we went to both the same schools, and she is doing litigation (which is what I am hoping to do).

I just dont know how to start it/what to say and wondering if this could even be helpful.

Thought ...

It's totally fine to reach out, and many alums are happy to help students. I wouldn't just ask for a job, but reach out and tell the attorney you have an interest in her kind of practice and in working in Texas and ask if she has any advice for you w/r/t obtaining a 1L summer job, or whatever.

I'd agree with this- also, if you're nearby (or will be during break) consider asking just to get a cup of coffee to discuss his/her career path etc.

Thanks for the response. Its okay to email Alumni before December 1st right?

There's really nothing wrong with doing this as long as you're not a jackass about it. Some people will be willing to help, others will be too busy or not care, but it's certainly not going to hurt you. Make sure to attach a large amount of pornography to your email though, just so they know you're a team player who's willing to give a little to get a little.

I do this all the time, even now that I have a job lined up. Two points:

1. Be concise. I usually go with three sentences: introduction; career goals / connection to recipient; request meeting or phone call. Get in and get out.
2. Watch your tone. Be respectful and appreciative without crossing the line into awkwardness or brown-nosing. If you're new to this, have a couple of people glance at the email before you hit send.
