Specifically asking about NYC V10 firms. If not, how / when do you get your tax LLM if you join their tax group?

Does the tax group require you to get an LLM? If not, why get it, then?

I see plenty of associates without them, so I'm guessing no. Is it possible to have a successful tax career without an LLM?

Yes, definitely. Most of the people I know who do tax work at big firms (and who have been very successful doing so) do not have a tax LLM.

Tax LLMs are -primarily- for people that cannot get a tax job.

This is the rule for ALL LLMs unless you got your law degree outside the US. Anyone who can get a firm job after a 2L SA would be insane to turn it down to then pursue an LLM.

This is very true, although I was more curious about either pursuing part time while working / taking time off to pursue and then go back to the firm. General consensus so far seems to be this isn't necessary, though.
