Does anybody know the policy for Kirkland-Chicago? Somebody mentioned to me that it was a $10k stipend on top of all bar expenses, but I'm not sure they're right.

Nice. After talking with a lot of people going to NYC V10s and getting sub-$10,000 advances, it seemed a little too good to be true.Anonymous User wrote:They're right.Anonymous User wrote:Does anybody know the policy for Kirkland-Chicago? Better than my future firms offering of 5k advance for a January start date... I need to figure out if I can do some doc review sept-dec. Need to make ends meet somehow.Fresh Prince wrote:Now you just have to hope that it's enough money to tide you over before you start.JO 14 wrote: Thanks. Walking around $ sounds great! One V10 firm offered a salary advance of $10,000... and made their associates start in January. But no problem: Lot's of people can live off of $10,000 in borrowed money for 7 months.

If anybody has time to search for it, there's an outdated but probably still roughly accurate Above The Law chart containing all of this information. I think from just before the recession hit.

Latham LA gives $15k stipend but you have to pay for your own bar course and bar fees.Anonymous User wrote:Does anyone know Latham's policy? advance or stipend?

As far as I've heard, Gibson's is the best. $13,333 stipend, plus bar expenses, plus relocation expenses up to $10k

Except in NYC, where it's a $10,000 in NYC.Anonymous User wrote:As far as I've heard, Gibson's is the best. $13,333 stipend, plus bar expenses, plus relocation expenses up to $10k
And, if I recall correctly, WSGR, Paul Hastings, and Jenner & Block seem to beat Gibson as well when Gibson does pay a stipend.

PH gives 16K but doesn't pay bar expenses. So you may come out ahead or behind depending on how cheap you go with bar prep.Fresh Prince wrote:Except in NYC, where it's a $10,000 in NYC.Anonymous User wrote:As far as I've heard, Gibson's is the best. $13,333 stipend, plus bar expenses, plus relocation expenses up to $10k

IMO: $10K for 7 months does not work unless half the $25K for SA is set aside and figured in.

Chiming in that the firm I am going to in secondary market pays a 10k stipend plus bar exam classes and moving costs. From what I understand that is very generous for the market.
However, I have heard it is so their office can attract T14 talent into the secondary market. They pretty much exclusively hire T14 grads and encourage (read: require) clerkships.

No one is forcing you to live in either of those places during your 7 month firm-subsidized vacation.Desert Fox wrote:That's like 3.5 weeks rent in NYC. 5 in DC.IAFG wrote:And they're floating you ten grand to deal with that. Don't most people blow it on a bar trip? Always kind of makes me chuckle that they spend borrowed money on a bar trip.

DC is nowhere near that expensive. You're looking at $3K a month, or less.Desert Fox wrote:That's like 3.5 weeks rent in NYC. 5 in DC.IAFG wrote:And they're floating you ten grand to deal with that.
