Does anybody know the policy for Kirkland-Chicago? Somebody mentioned to me that it was a $10k stipend on top of all bar expenses, but I'm not sure they're right.

Nice. After talking with a lot of people going to NYC V10s and getting sub-$10,000 advances, it seemed a little too good to be true.

Now you just have to hope that it's enough money to tide you over before you start.

One V10 firm offered a salary advance of $10,000... and made their associates start in January. But no problem: Lot's of people can live off of $10,000 in borrowed money for 7 months.
Better than my future firms offering of 5k advance for a January start date... I need to figure out if I can do some doc review sept-dec. Need to make ends meet somehow.

If anybody has time to search for it, there's an outdated but probably still roughly accurate Above The Law chart containing all of this information. I think from just before the recession hit.

Latham LA gives $15k stipend but you have to pay for your own bar course and bar fees.

As far as I've heard, Gibson's is the best. $13,333 stipend, plus bar expenses, plus relocation expenses up to $10k

Except in NYC, where it's a $10,000 in NYC.

And, if I recall correctly, WSGR, Paul Hastings, and Jenner & Block seem to beat Gibson as well when Gibson does pay a stipend.

PH gives 16K but doesn't pay bar expenses. So you may come out ahead or behind depending on how cheap you go with bar prep.

7 months? What am I missing here?

IMO: $10K for 7 months does not work unless half the $25K for SA is set aside and figured in.

Chiming in that the firm I am going to in secondary market pays a 10k stipend plus bar exam classes and moving costs. From what I understand that is very generous for the market.

However, I have heard it is so their office can attract T14 talent into the secondary market. They pretty much exclusively hire T14 grads and encourage (read: require) clerkships.

And they're floating you ten grand to deal with that. Incredibly generous in any industry.

That's like 3.5 weeks rent in NYC. 5 in DC.

No one is forcing you to live in either of those places during your 7 month firm-subsidized vacation.

Don't most people blow it on a bar trip? Always kind of makes me chuckle that they spend borrowed money on a bar trip.

DC is nowhere near that expensive. You're looking at $3K a month, or less.
