So if I'm using aunts and uncles as family ties to an area (better than nothing right? ) should I refer to them as "Family" or specify?
I'm inclined to stick with family since it seems more persuasive and clarify should they interview me.

Sent. That was a really nice procrastination break from my actual studies.
Please let one of these come through.

Who are you sending it to? The recruiting contact or hiring attorney?

Pretty sure your inclinations are correct.2014 wrote:So if I'm using aunts and uncles as family ties to an area (better than nothing right? ) should I refer to them as "Family" or specify?

Did the hiring attorney go to your school or would you have something specific to say to him/her? If no, recruiting contact and also contact an alum in the firm.Blessedassurance wrote:Who are you sending it to? The recruiting contact or hiring attorney?

If the firm has an online form as well as a Nalp recruiting contact should I email or use the form?

Only ended up putting 2 in the physical mail. A classmate just sent me an amazing excel doc that I hope I can use for mail merging purposes. Literally has (in MM format) all the firms that take 1Ls in NY, Chi, DC, Texas, Miami, Atlanta, and the California cities. I owe that dude more than a beer - maybe a keg?

What are ya'll doing if a firm asks for a transcript? Are you putting your undergrad transcript? Or just the blank one from your current school?

Is anybody spamming firms with a generic cover letter? This personalization stuff takes way too long.

In Hawaii here!
On NALP, there is only one firm that hires 1Ls listed and just four firms listed overall. I don't have time to mass mail until after finals, but I was hoping to mail out my resume to some of the big firms here that definitely practice in the area I am interested in.
I have no idea if these firms even hire 1Ls, but should I just do it anyway?
What should I say in my email?

Just the email address. As for transcripts, my best guess is to say you can offer it to them in January.goldeneye wrote:are you applying via the firm site applications, or just the email address? and what about transcripts?renardthecrocs wrote:Generic, yupBlessedassurance wrote:Is anybody spamming firms with a generic cover letter? It's not like firms don't know what timeline you're on.

That's how I did it, usually with the contact info from the NALP directory.Jsa725 wrote:So what's the credited way to go here? Email hiring partners from the firms website (or whatever email they give)?
Cover letter in the body of the email and attach the Rez?
25 mailed yesterday, a million to go.

I think I used something similar. As long as you get the message across without terrible grammar, I expect it's fine.Jsa725 wrote:solid... i have my resume ready to go and a judicial cover letter that i need to tweak for private practicefranklyscarlet wrote:That's how I did it, usually with the contact info from the NALP directory.Jsa725 wrote:So what's the credited way to go here? btw/ you emailed correct?
edit: did you use "writing to express interest in a summer position at your firm during the summer of 2013." is there a credited way of this introductory clause?

Re: 1L Summer Job Search (Early Bird Special)
I upped the ante. I'm not expressing interest; I'm applying. And I said as much. I'm "expressing interest" when I send out those networking emails. This felt more real somehow (even if it's not).
Also "next summer" probably less cumbersome/just as obvious as "summer of 2013".

Re: 1L Summer Job Search (Early Bird Special)
OP of the thread may want to take note and add some of these questions I've heard a lot of the past few days w/r/t firms. Here are my best shots at answers.
Writing Sample: Yes for judges. No for firms, unless they ask. Otherwise, check specific postings.
Transcript: If you're a typical 1L, firms know you don't have a transcript yet. You should not wait until January to apply. If you're still in contact with them (have had a meeting of some sort), you can update them when you get grades.
Email or Snail Mail? Email.
Email contact or online application? This one stumps me. I haven't done any applications; then again I don't have a job yet.
Attach the cover letter or put it in the body of the email? My CPO is very much pro-attaching everything, and it's not that hard - you just jot a 2 line email and attach your document. I think that would make it easy for the recruiting person to print your application and keep everything together, but doing a cover letter in an email works just as well, if you prefer that. Most important thing is that you should only have one attachment - a pdf file merging all of your application elements.

Just so people know, every recruiting contact I have spoken with has said they hate receiving snail mail... When you email it to them they can print a fresh copy of your resume and cover letter and dont have to deal with the hassel of snail mail. Just a heads up.
I sent out apps to all texas firms hiring 1Ls yesterday, hopefully something works out!
