Um no. Their tax group is small and they thought you wanted tax. Just call and accept.

This narrative is really confusing ... but if I'm understanding it right, no. Just call and accept.

Why are you asking us? Don't you think if you call and accept, and they did not intend to give you the offer, they will just tell you that?

Maybe not a go strike up the band kind of offer, but an offer nevertheless.

I'm confused by your narrative. It sounds like you're saying that after the bit about not having anything in tax, and only having this other area, you said, basically "I'd love to take that offer" and he said "we'd love to have you, call and let us know if you accept the offer".

Which makes no sense because it sounds like you already did. And what's 3L oci have to do with it? what's the offer you're supposed to call and accept?

If person you met with encouraged you to do 3L OCI and brought up the poor assignment in the alternative practice area, I find it strange that he would also say there is an offer for the alternative practice area.

The whole thing is strange. If I'm reading it correctly...

1)Partner says you have an offer.

2) Other guy calls and says sorry, we don't have tax spots and if you want to do something else re-apply 3L.

3) Then he offers you a job in the something else area.

4) You try to accept but he says call back monday?

This post makes no sense.

Reading it is like trying to decipher the Sphinx.

I would say that you should have been no-offered for no other reason than the fact that you write like a punch-drunk 2nd grader.

The second guy was just trying to help you out. He didn't want you to accept an offer if you really, really wanted tax. The thing about struggling on an assignment was not to say they didn't want you for that area, but was to feel you out on whether you would really dislike working in that area. The stuff about 3L OCI was to encourage you to look at other firms if you really wanted tax, with the assurance that you had an offer at this firm.

There is no V5 that would be this cryptic about a cold offer. Just relax.

If you'd been cold offered, you'd know it.

Maybe he just wanted to give you a night to think about it? After all no one expects you to be offered a job that you mgiht potentially invest many years in and say yes yes right away
