Have you guys ever heard of a law firm that invites candidates for informational interviews? What is the purpose of this?

I had a few firms to which I applied for 1L summer work respond that they don't hire 1L's, but would love to have me for an informational interview. The purpose is to nurture the relationship, and facilitate a possible future employment opportunity.

Ok, I have a friend who graduated in May who got a random informational interview invitation from a midsize law firm. I believe her law school forwarded her resume; it was totally unsolicited. Should she assume that they are hiring/considering hiring?

I graduated a few years ago, and I work in the public interest field, so I am not sure what advice to give her. Are unsolicited informational interviews common among small/midsize law firms?

It's certainly possible that they are considering her employment. However, based on the fact that you said her law school forwarded her resume, I have a feeling that the school probably framed it in terms of "hire her or talk to her." So, the law firm is talking to her. However, that certainly doesn't mean that the firm won't hire her if she does well in the information interview - there are many stories about people getting real interviews after informational ones.

I've just never heard of a firm inviting someone for an informational meeting. I just figured why would they waste their time if they aren't hiring? What exactly are they getting out of it?
