If I accept an offer for full time employment after graduation, can I turn it down later before I start? Is there some kind of character and fitness issue about accepting an offer I'm not likely going to follow through on? The reason I'm accepting is that I want to keep my options open while I explore another alternative....
Perfectly fine.

I've done it personally. Twice.

We are an "at will" country, esp. when it comes to lawyers and law firms.

If firms can lay you off, you can certainly renege without feeling too bad about it. Lose like one night of sleep, just so that galactic karma isn't totally thrown out of whack.

And, no, there's no "character and fitness issue" here.
