Best all-around markets in which to start legal career, etc.

What are they and why? Take into account every potentially important factor that affects quality of life, including schools, housing prices, overall cost of living, transportation, crime rates, health care, weather, entertainment options, etc. Also, take into account the ease of breaking into the market.

Egregious error here in failing to include Los Angeles.

This should make people reconsider their Austin votes.

EDIT: accidental anon; utlaw2014
I ignored that factor, since I think it's a bit silly to include when judging desirability. Austin is incredibly desirable place to be for a lot of people...thus, that + it being a small market makes it really hard to break into.

Since NY and DC are the only markets that you can really break into w/o ties, aren't they necessarily the only two options?

I suppose, but I've never heard DC referred to as secondary, and "all-around" is pretty different from "secondary."

L.A. can be included in "other", but I purposely left out the usual suspects (NY, S.F./Bay, Boston, Chicago, etc.) because I am looking at "all-around" quality of life as a 1A, and not just the best places to start work.

What if you're already married with at least one kid? Is L.A. still a good option? It could be, and some people might opine that it is. That's why this is fun to debate.

They could be good options, but would most people consider those places to be good options? Having a family could make certain markets easier to break into, because employers might assume that you want roots.

Even if you don't already have kids, there are lots of factors to consider. it's a worthy debate.

User has been outed. This is not a proper use of the anonymous feature. Also, poster is an objectively terrible person for not using resized imgur pics.

It depends on what you want. LA is the best place overall, it's beautiful, the lifestyle is incredible, but it's very very expensive and spread out, plus it's in a state run by crazy people so taxes will go up and up as will problems. However, it's still worth it. Austin, on the other hand, is the best value place to live, you are a king/queen if you make over $100k a year, there's a lot going on, a lot of growth, etc but it's not LA and never will be.

If the only question is QOL, then the answer is Denver.

You should add Boston to the list.

Great schools, great public transportation, very low crime in the suburbs, great hospitals, four seasons (though the humidity, literally, bites in winter), and awesome historical/cultural sites. Great sports scene too. Housing prices are tough to swallow, but they are nowhere near NY/LA/DC levels in many areas from what I've been told.

As for ease of breaking into the market, I moved here last year from Utah and have done just fine.

And even in DC, ties help significantly.

2 most surprising things about this thread:

1. pdaddy is the OP and the thread is shit.
2. The answer to the question is subjective.
