I applied for a summer program with a local firm and received an e-mail to schedule an interview. Before responding to the firm, I googled them to refresh myself because I've applied to a lot of firms this past week. Through Google, I found out that the first year salary is $42,000. Should I even bother to schedule an interview? I have 0 offers to far, but I doubt I can survive in DC on ~$32k after taxes. If I have to make that little, I'd at least want to be in PI.

I meant to imply that I wouldn't turn down an interview (no matter how shitty the job may sound) unless I already had a better offer in hand. Would you rather have a low-paying job or be unemployed?

edit: also, what do you have to lose by doing the interview? would you have to travel a long way to get there or is it local?

Why would you turn down any interview if you don't have something else lined up?

I don't have anything to lose. I guess I wouldn't mind summering at the place if I couldn't find anything better, but I won't be able to afford to work there full time with COL/loans. If I were in a position where it was my only full-time legal offer, I'd have to go back to my old career.

With that said, I have interviews for places that pay a lot better. Was just trying to decide if this one interview was worth the 3 hours roundtrip.

At least if you get an offer you can email every other firm you have ever applied to and explain that working at X is still your first choice but you have this other offer you need to act on.

Ok, definitely true. I will schedule the interview.

I summered at a place in DC where the starting pay would be around 50k (pre tax). However, I did it because it was the only thing I had up to the point I accepted (November). The subject matter is interesting and I got substantial client interaction. It was worth it.

like others said, do not underestimate the value of having an offer at a firm. get an offer at this firm and then spread the word to your other, more desirable leads.

Go to the interview. You lose nothing. The market is bad enough that people graduate with no jobs, not just with with 40k job. Also, maybe this can help you in 3lolci, or clerking... who knows.
