Leaving Clerkship, Using Judge as a Reference

My term is up in a few months and I'm starting to apply to firms. Will the firm screeners call my judge? I obviously want to use my judge as a reference, but I don't want 20+ obnoxious HR screeners bombarding him with calls. Would it be better to attach a LOR to my application? Any thoughts?

OP here. Yes, I told him that I'm applying to a bunch of firms, and he said he doesn't mind me using him as a reference, but doesn't wanna be inundated by callers. It's a tough situation because I know he'll give me a great rec, but I don't wanna overstep.

Just about every firm will have the bare minimum of common sense not to call your references without first letting you know, this is 10x as true when a reference is a judge.
