Does this ever happen?
(I was just instructed to call a partner at a firm I really want...don't they usually call you?)

It has been reported to happen. The only proper response in that situation is F--- you.

Yes. I had gotten to the point where I could recognize which firm was calling by looking at the first three digits after the area code. My dream firm called me during class. Rushed out, so of course, everyone knew what was happening.

Partner: "Everyone just LOVED you and you made such a great impression and [various other platitudes] ..."
Me (heart bursting with hope that this god-awful process was finally about to end): ".... Yes?"
Partner: ".... BUT we're narrowing our summer class size to ten and we are unable to offer you a spot."
Me: "Oh."
Partner: "But you are always welcome to apply again next year!"

This is why you should never get emotionally attached to a firm. Also why you should call the number back in the safety of your home, not at school, because otherwise you'll be forced to walk back into class and hold back your tears at everyone's expectant looks.

I got a rejection via phone. Followed by an invitation by partner to be friends on a social media site. (Hopefully he doesn't troll TLS). I think that's the "let's just be friends" talk...

pretty sure Orrick tells you didn't get a job there by phone.
