How Common are Pre-Clerkship SAs?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Sep 17, 2012 7:08 pm

Summered at a NYC firm and obtained an A3 clerkship. Apparently the policy at my firm is that they consider requests to come back during the summer between graduation and clerkship on a case by case basis. Spoke with friends from another similar firm and the policy there is that all pre-clerks can come back, but only for 4 weeks. I made full use of student loans, so even 4-6 weeks would be a huge help in making my loan payments during the clerkship year. What is the norm at, lets say V20 NYC firms?

I think most firms will accommodate, although I recall spending my time studying and taking the bar.

Piggy-backing off OP's question, how possible is it to find a pre-clerk SA at a firm other than the one you summered at, with D. Ct or COA or both?

OP here - there were a few pre-clerks there this past summer, although a minority of pre-clerks came back, I'm not sure whether by choice or not. I could work for 6 weeks and still have a month to study before the bar.

I was an SA at a V25 in DC and there was another SA who was post grad/pre clerkship (had previously been a 2L SA). I think she spent a good bit of time at the office working on bar prep. There seemed to be kind of a wink/nod arrangement going on...

My office was similar. They said they expected 3-4 hours of work a day from the pre-clerkship SA, with the balance on BarBri, but that doing 1 hour a day was unacceptable slacking.
