Shearman Sterling, Ropes and Gray (NY), or Paul Weiss?

All firms are in New York. Interested in corporate, probably private equity or capital markets. Hoping for some input to help me figure out which of the three is best for that line of work.

Bump. If anyone wants to explain their vote, that'd help a lot too.

If you're looking for PE specifically, Ropes has a lot of that work. Paul Weiss is known for litigation but has a good corporate department as well, not sure how much PE exposure they have though. I've heard rumors of Sherman & Sterling being on the decline for a few years now, but I've never heard exactly why. If anyone has info I'm curious about this.

Shearman is 'in decline' because it fell from a V10 firm to a V25 firm since the early 2000s when they laid off a bunch of people.

Whether that means they don't get any more good work or whether it means associates at other firms just don't think highly of them, I don't know. Chambers still ranks them relatively well in NY in a lot of corporate areas

FWIW, Ropes does most of its PE work out of Boston. It does some work in New York, but if you look at the Chambers rankings for New York, its New York office obviously isn't on par with its Boston office.

Was not expecting the votes to be this close...

i was under the impression that the ropes office in NY is a relatively new office. its name in ny is not that big or well respected. i also remember them having a lot of issues last recruiting cycle keeping people on hold until october and rejecting almost no one until very late in the game. pw and ss are much more "ny" firms with excellent reputations. i would not choose rg over them, especially if you plan on staying in ny.

A small drop in Vault rankings like that means absolutely nothing. I would be worried about the layoffs though

Corporate = Ropes or SS, not PW.

If you look at the Chambers rankings though, PW is on par with Ropes Boston for Fund formation and PE. And they're on par with SS for capital markets. And for M&A, all three firms are tied at Elite band 3.

Since Ropes is a smaller satellite office, it's NYC office is less prestigious. If it were Ropes Boston, I'd go there for PE work. But since it's not, it's probably more a judgment call between PW and SS.
