Top Law Schools

I'm a 3L in the process of sending out as many resumes as possible. I'm looking for suggestions on how to write letters to law firms to see if I can get a few (or one for that matter) to bite and show some interest in possibly hiring me out of law school. I know that this isn't the ideal method to utilize in finding a job, but my fiance has just graduated from Physical Therapy school and is about to start working in a city that is near the area in which we grew up. I really have no contacts in that area, so I figured I would send a resume and cover letter to a bunch of firms just indicating that I am going to be graduating in 2013 and will be looking for a job in the area and to get my name out there.

My strongest skill is my legal writing. Should I send a writing sample with the initial letter/resume? My grades are decent, but nothing spectacular, but my grades in my writing courses are great. I'm also on my schools national moot court team as the brief writer, so I really want to make sure that I can show my strongest skill, while not coming off as desperate or overbearing.

So if anyone could offer some advice or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!
