It was way funnier when Judge Martinez, widely thought of as one of the most friendly judges for the plaintiff's employment bar and former EEOC attorney, did this last year.Kronk wrote:is this bullshit normal
The U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado is seeking an unpaid Pro Bono Law Clerk to U.S. District Judge Raymond P. Moore. In this position the selected applicant will assume duties traditionally performed by federal court law clerks. The selected applicant will be asked to make an aspirational commitment to the position for a period of 6-12 months with a negotiable start date, but no later than September 2, 2014. Preference may be given to those applicants who can start earlier. Applications submitted after the closing date will not be considered.

I have seen a handful of other federal judges do this. So, unfortunately, it is not unusual.Kronk wrote:is this bullshit normal

Re: The Vale of Tears (3L Job Hunting) (No advice for 0/1/2Ls)
I had this interview back at the end of April. It turns out the firm is trying to expand its litigation practice that is related to its transactional/regulatory practice. So I would be stoked to get the position. I thought the interview went well. I waited till about a week or so ago and followed up. I waited over three weeks to follow up because the firm was pretty slow-moving throughout the process of getting information and scheduling the interview. Anyhow, after I called they let me know they "had not forgotten about me" but were still deciding. So I'm still waiting. I would have to move for it, but it would be great training/experience. Fingers crossed!lbg0125 wrote:Anybody have tips for an interview with a small, boutique-ish firm that practices in an area completely opposite of everything on my resume? I have a pretty solidly litigation-oriented resume and I have an interview coming up with a firm that does m&a/securities/corporate work. It interests me but I have no idea why I was chosen for an interview. I applied because I apply to virtually anything I might remotely be qualified for and did not expect it to pan out at all.

How long do you guys usually wait before sending a follow-up email to your application? And how long is too long after? I have some things I applied to about a week ago, and other things I applied to about 2 months ago (sent a follow-up about a month after, received a "still no decisions" email back). These would be follow-ups expressing my continued interest in positions that were advertised as openings.

Personally? 3 weeks to a month. YMMV.Anonymous User wrote:How long do you guys usually wait before sending a follow-up email to your application? And how long is too long after? I ended up calling the courthouse and asked to be transferred to the JA for the judge. Whoever's voicemail I got (maybe the current clerk?) was not the voicemail for the JA I spoke to before, so I left probably a confusing message for her.[/quote]Jessuf wrote: Was going to call now but realized that the original phone call is so old that it doesn't show up in my recent calls anymore. And of course I never wrote it down. And of course it isn't listed online. Oops.
It's probably fine, Jess.

Graduating 3L here. I have an upcoming interview with a biglaw firm at a state where I have not registered to take the bar. Is this a big issue? Any advice?

They might ask about where you're registered to take the bar and you're gonna have to come up w a dece reason why you registered and that other state and reiterate your commitment to the location of the firm you're interviewing withAnonymous User wrote:Graduating 3L here. So yes it might be an issue. Nothing to do but prepare accordingly

Do the state bars have some kind of reciprocity? UBE states or similar? Is it too late to register for the other state bar?

No reciprocity. It is not too late to register for other bar but cannot take both cause they are on same day. Due to late fee, it is pretty expensive to register for thie new bar. I guess I can register and cancel one of them depending on whether I get this job.

Put your best foot forward, do your best interview, and if they ask about the bar, be honest. They'll figure it out for you if they like you.

If it's biglaw, how necessary is being licensed to begin with? Outside of potential questions regarding your desire to be in the area the office is, just say you will sign up for the feb test if it's too late to sign up for the july test by the time they hand out an offer.Anonymous User wrote:Graduating 3L here. I've seen quite a few linkdens where new graduates get licensed in one state but come october they are working for a firm in a different state.

As the others said I wouldn't worry about it. If you have to sign up for another bar exam they will pay for it, though even if you get the job I'm sure they'll just let you be licensed in your current state and let you take the Feb bar/waive in eventually.
