I have a callback interview that includes the managing partner of the office. It's the satellite office of a well-respected firm.
Any suggestions of thoughtful questions to ask him/her?

The managing partner of an office generally just does basic administrative stuff. Budgeting, hiring/firing, etc. They're important, but it's not like their the chair of the firm. Just ask what kind of responsibilities they have and how the managing partner interacts with younger associates. Often the managing partner has lunch with every class of associates on a regular basis to get a sense of morale and etc. at a place. It might be worth it to get a sense of that.
Beyond that, though: just treat him like a normal partner and concentrate on his substantive legal work.

Our managing partner actually plays a pretty large role in the trajectory of our office. I'd ask something like, "What is your philosophy on growth of the firm?"
