OK to ask firm for an advance on 2013 SA salary?

I don't know if it's a common thing to do but the people I met with at the firm seemed pretty cool. I just need like 6k to get a pretty acceptable wardrobe for this year - that's only 2 weeks pay so it probably won't be that big of a deal.
Who should I speak to about this?

Don't ask for it unless they offer it. I think a lot of firms do. I dunno about 6k tho, the maximum at my firm was 2k.

Who the hell needs 6k for a 10-week summer associate wardrobe?
Stop gambling/buying drugs.

2k is standard. 6k you're going to raise eyebrows but ask if you have actual reasons.

You're asking for it now? My firm gave an advance, but it was in the spring.

Agreed. Asking for $6k for clothes is going to do more eyebrow raising than showing up in suits from goodwill.

TITCR.
My firm didn't give an advance or offer one. Just pick up some suits that don't look like shit. You're only there for a few weeks, you don't need to buy a ton of clothes and the clothes you do buy don't need to be the most expensive stuff around.

This is such a ridiculous thing to even think to ask. Use a credit card if you're so desperate for clothing but I can't see why you'd need that much money for a couple of suits.

In the offer letter for one of the firms I'm considering they said in spring they'd give me a 4k advance. I probably wouldn't have asked for it if it wasn't offered.

depends on the firm. at a V10 you should be able to just have brooks brothers bill the firm directly. at less well-known firms they may ask for some kind of verification of employment.
