Generally speaking, are there grade/rank ranges for students landing post-graduation clerkships (of any kind)? I'm attending a school in the lower T1 range.

Yes. It varies by judge, but I would say at the absolute minimum you'd need to be top 1/3 to avoid having your application thrown in the trash immediately. It also varies by location, type of court, etc.

Federal or state? Either one is very difficult to break into. When are you looking to apply? Better school range? Class rank? Journal / LR? Published?

I don't believe California state does much for clerkships, I think it is almost entirely career staff attorneys. Washington state is tough, and a lot of the judges have already hired for 2013 at both the SSC and COA level.

Federal stuff, you still have time, technically. California is super difficult to break into, and I don't know how many judges are on-plan. But essentially, you need to have apps done on OSCAR by 9/2/2012. That doesn't leave you much time, but the longest part will probably be trying to get 3 letters of recommendation together.
