Is it a good idea to wear a 3 piece suit to callback?

Wore 3 piece suits to all of my screeners, got lots of callbacks.

But now I'm reading what my school says about callbacks and interviews and appropriate dress, and they say no 3 piece?

Why?

Who knows. I guess it might look arrogant to some of the partners and associates. You're an applicant; I would just dress as conservatively as possible.

I like three-piece suits. I own a few. However, I seldom wear them. I will wear one to work once in a while, for certain situations, but usually I stick to the 2 piece. The reason that your school is telling you not to wear them is that a) it only looks good if done exactly right; b) it can be viewed as pretentious; and c) in any interview situation, you typically want to look good, clean cut, etc., but your dress shouldn't really stand out.

If it worked for you on the screener interviews and you feel strongly about it, then keep on wearing them. But if you want to play it safe/straight; i'd follow career services and wear a nice, non-descript 2 piece suit.

Unless the hiring partner was wearing suspenders and a bow tie and/or a 3 piece, in which case wear that vest proudly.

Good luck on your interviews and let us know what you decide and what happens.

Depends. How do you feel about associates and partners referring to you as "That fucking guy in the 3-piece"?

Why do it? It will make you stand out, and not in a good way. A lot of the TLS advice has gone overboard, but a 3 piece suit is so obvious that some will people will notice it. Just drop the vest

TITCR.

You'll have a nickname when the interviewers talk to each other, and you'll be referred to as "3-piece." I guess do it if you're comfortable with that. But they're probs not going to ding you for it.

Wearing a three piece is egregious. You're lucky it didn't hurt you more.

OP here. Why egregious? Does a three piece suit come off as too striver?

Maybe only wear it to the white shoe firms?

The time-tested mantra is that you should never stand out at a firm interview based on your outfit/dress. Wearing a 3 piece suit will clearly make you stand out for all the wrong reasons and that is never a good idea.

Forget how they come across; three-piece suits ARE pretentious and douchey. No one at Cravath or Jones Day, the only two big firms that still follow full business formal dress code in NYC, wears a three-piece suit to work, let alone the myriad firms that have graduated to some form of business casual (or full-on casual at Quinn). You'll just look like an overdressed tool. Don't wear it anywhere.

Would you wear a tuxedo to your interviews? It's not as bad, but it's the same concept.

With this reasoning, you would fit right in with the OCI/Callback Men's Clothing Thread.

Unless your callback is with the 1800's, no.

Yeah this. I'd say outside of V10, go with a standard charcoal two piece. For the V10s, go with a boldly striped three piece, and maybe even throw on a fedora. And if you're at CSM or Wachtell, you should literally wear white shoes. They might even be offended if you don't. They don't call them "white shoe" firms for nothing. Who do you think they are, Winsttton and Strawn?
