Honestly I would be flexible and would be willing to do corporate to work there. But I want litigation, and think I would be better at answering "why litigation" than "why corporate." And I know they have a good litigation department as well. But I am worried that they only take people post-clerkship or something, because they could probably get really good candidates given that they pay so well. Is there a risk here, or should I go ahead and say I want to litigate?

It's a horrible mistake. The dozens of lawyers (nearly half the firm) who do litigation all got in by pretending they wanted to do corporate.

his point about post-clerkship #s is legitimate (but then again, if someone has wachtell-level grades, getting a clerkship shouldn't be a problem)

I should have no problem getting a clerkship, that's true, but would still like to summer there to see what it's like.

Well doesn't the question simply boil down to:

Do I want to do litigation or do I just want to work at Wachtell?

If you want to do litigation then you should be up front about it. If you want to work at Wachtell ABOVE ALL OTHER FIRMS then consider corporate?

HALF THE DAMN FIRM IS LITIGATION.

Wacthell has a higher percentage of litigators than most other NYC V10 firms.

There is literally 0 reason to suspect it is easier (or harder!) to get a job with Wachtell by expressing an interest in corporate.

Those are just numbers bro.
