How to get resume "passed on"

So I was not invited and listed as an alternate for two of my top firms for 2L OCI coming up (T40 school, t20% grades, LR). One firm in my hometown where I know several partners from growing up and the other firm in the same state, where both of my summer bosses used to work (1 as a 30+ year partner, the other as an associate; this is a govt gig). So, how do I use these connections to get my resume back to the top of the pile and get a screener? I think my grades are pretty competitive, right?
I was thinking of emailing my old church basketball coach (haha yep, but we keep in touch) who is a partner at firm A, saying I hope I could get a second look, could he pass on my resume, etc.
As for the other firm, I'm less sure what to do. I could knock on my boss's door and try to casually bring up OCIs...ask him to pass on my resume? He left the firm earlier this year for this govt gig but as far as I know plans to return in a few months.
How do I play this? Thanks. Anon for the specificity.
