Are there any district court clerkships that I could apply to at this point? Where do I find listings for them and instructions about how to apply?

A lot of D.Ct. are on-plan, so yes. But do you have letters of rec and everything else?

Google is a wonderful thing. So is the TLS search mechanism.

Federal Circuit, Tax Court, Bankruptcy Court ... all of these are "worth applying to" assuming you know what area of law you want to practice in.

Also, depending on where you want to practice, many state appellate courts / judges will hire clerks. But just bear in mind that if you clerk for the appellate court in NY, it may not carry very much weight in, say, Illinois. It'll still look good, but just won't have the immediate or lasting impact that a dct clerkship would.

It took a long time to get my recs in. Professors are just slow.

Varies by judge. At the latest, September 3rd, I believe.

I'm about to blast out some apps, there still should be a decent amount of DCt judges hiring.

Can you send applications while recommendations are pending? Is it still possible to make the deadline without asking for recommendations?

You guys need to go to OSCAR and look at the tutorials. Judges require 2-3 letters of recommendation. You can build an app for each jugs without assigning recommenders, but you can't finalize the application. If it's not finalized, it doesn't get sent and you don't have a shot.

And while many CoA judges are moving off plan, not all have. Last year I got 3 CoA interviews on-plan. Point is, if you're competitive, don't completely ignore CoA but figure out who is on plan.

No shot COA, and likely no shot at District Court. No clue about Magistrate.

Check the Virginia Guide. Too late for a lot of them.

You can finalize the application without recommendation letters and it will be visible to judges. That said, good luck without any letters. But, if you are missing 1 letter and are down to the wire, it's better to finalize without the final letter.

Really? I was making sure everything looked OK and had no letters selected, and I thought it wouldn't let me finalize. Sorry if I'm wrong about that.

For state clerkships, do the professors send you the recommendations and then you send them to the judge, or do they send it directly to the judge?

Either way. I got all of mine sent to me in sealed envelopes, then sent everything as one package. Seemed easier to me.

Anybody know of a link where I can find a cover letter template for clerkships.

Thanks!
