Mass mailing?

I'm positive this is an old question, so feel free to complain/refer me to other threads, I'm just bad at searching as it turns out. Sorry!
I'm hoping to get a job in a small secondary market that isn't well represented at my school's OCI. My "credentials" are strong, but my ties might be seen as weak? (I'm joining a significant other.) I've contacted a handful of firms there and haven't heard back. It hasn't been very long and I think it's likely still early, but I'm wondering what I can realistically expect from random mailings like this. Also, what is the etiquette for following up if/when I don't hear back?
