How successful is mass-mailing supposed to be?

I ask this because it may seem like a stupid question, but I don't know. I am shooting for DC and sent apps to 25 firms or so that aren't coming to my school (DCN)'s interviewing program, but haven't heard back from any at all other than one rejection. It's been awhile.
Should I take it as a bad sign that I haven't heard from them? Recalibrate my expectations for August?

Not very successful; probably under 10% for most applicants.
But it's early. Firms don't do things as they receive things, especially for larger ones they figure out all of their recruiting needs, generally after this year's summer class is done. And some will only turn to mailed in applications after they've looked at OCI type applications.

I think 10% is a really generous estimate, even. I guess it depends on your stats & school, any random from a T14 is going to have a significantly higher chance of success with mass mailing than say, bottom 25% at a non T14.

If you're top 5% at CCN mass mailing will be very successful. If you're bottom 10% at MSU, not so much. Really depends on your stats and the school + the region you're mass mailing.

13.76%. 17.43% if you use resume paper, and 1.43% higher if you use stamps with American flags on them.

Anon, in case you don't get the sarcasm, mail EVERY firm in NYC hiring 2Ls that you can find bc you have an uphill battle.

OP here. Wait what? Top quarter at lower T14 is an "uphill battle" for NYC?

Whoops. On my cell phone and read that as "bottom quarter."
Advice still applies.

You haven't heard yet because they aren't really looking at that shit yet.
Summer programs either just ended or are not even done yet. Presumably, you sent your shit to same people that hold the summer's hands/orchestrate exit interviews/process reviews/plan summer events. They're a bit busy right now. Feel free to follow up in 2-4 weeks.

Mailed firms in my home market (secondary), have 3 CB's and a screener this week. That being said, at the CB today they said I was the very first person they interviewed for the upcoming summer. Also haven't heard from some of the others. The more firms rely on OCI the less receptive to Mass Mailing they seem.

...okay? Nothing in your anony-brag is license for OP to be worried about his MM response rate.

So pretty much all of the biglaw firms in NYC?

I'm glad your anecdote provided an effective counter to the 3Ls and grads who have done this before.

I ended up with multiple V25 offers from mass-mailing. Worth doing. Just resume-bomb essentially every NLJ250 firm in the market that doesn't go to your OCI.

The real takeaway is this. It doesn't matter how small a success rate it has. If you're a rising 2L, your #1 priority is finding a job. If God-forbid something were to happen at OCI, you're gonna want to have a bunch of mass mails out there, because the window is small. Do it. Do it now.

Got approximately 10 CB's last year through mass mailing. Definitely worth it.

Firms that don't rely on OCIs for hiring also don't have traditional summers. No firm is recruiting summer classes primarily from mass mailing.

Just sent out (snail mail) almost 300 mass mailers to SF/SV, LA, and NYC. When should I follow up with an email or phone call? Slightly below median at lower T14.

Preparing to mass mail this weekend. I do not fully understand the mechanics though.
Do I mail to the recruiting department or do I mail to the hiring partner if not the same?
Do I e-mail instead of mail, and if so again, is it the director of recruiting bla bla, or do I look for someone known as a hiring partner? (I would prefer to e-mail).
If, the firm is coming to my school OCI, but I did not get an interview... do I email the person who is visiting my school, or do I email the recruiting contact on their website?
Finally, for firms that have application forms, do I complete them, or do I just mail/email hiring dude?
Thanks
