When they only ask for resume (or resume and transcript)

I am curious how other people handle this. My CSO recommended that even if an employer only asks for a resume (or a resume and transcript) that I should still include a cover letter as the first page of my resume. I have done this a few times, and while I may make some good points in my cover letter, I feel like doing this shows that I don't read/ pay attention to instructions. Does anyone else do this? Is this common practice?

I would give the firm exactly what they ask for. If they wanted stuff they didn't ask for....they would have asked for it.

For mass mailing I always included a cover letter, for OCI never unless they asked

That's what I thought. I am only going to include a cover letter if I have some crazy type of connection to the firm, something that really fits, but otherwise, just what they asked for. Thanks for the confirmations

I think if you are mass mailing a firm way outside of your area, even if they don't ask for it, a brief explanation of why you want to be there is helpful.

This. If they specifically only ask for resume/transcript, only give resume/transcript. You simply cannot imagine the amount of paper generated in the OCI process.

I have a related question. Based on career services' advice, I don't put my GPA on my resume. I'm around median and they recommend putting your GPA on the resume only if you're in the top 25%.
A firm asked me to submit only a cover letter and resume. I don't want to submit a transcript because they didn't request it, but should I place my GPA on my resume in this situation? Does the answer change if the firm has hired 1Ls in the past without waiting for their GPA (1Ls from T14; firm in secondary market)?

My OCS told me to put it otherwise they'll assume sub 3.0 or something worse than median.
