unless this "relatively influential Director" has a name everyone recognizes this just seems too strong.

Why do it unless it's asked? It's easy as sh*t to get good LOR's. They mean nothing. That's why firms typically ask for references, so they can ask probing questions (which still doesn't typically lead anywhere - so many firms don't ask for this type of info at all).
