Any thoughts on whether one should submit a writing sample (to a law firm) when they say that submitting one is optional? Maybe just state in your cover letter that you have one you can send if they need one?

Our CSO says that unless a writing sample is REQUIRED, then don't submit it. The logic is that a writing sample is most likely to just hurt you (typos, mistakes, etc.)

Op here. That's what I thought too, but is the opposite of my cso's advice. Any other thoughts?
