Contacts: ask for preselect or just close consideration.

I have strong contacts at many firms in my market and I go to a school with a hybrid lottery. Should I be asking them to tell recruiters to take a close look at me, or should I have them directly tell the recruiters to preselect me for an interview?
I'm leaning toward the preselect option.

How close are you with these contacts? I would seriously stay away from "telling" them to do anything. If I were you I would express a lot of interest in the firm and tell them you bid on them at the fair. If they can help you, they will.

The contact is someone who is very influential to a variety of firms for many reasons, and is willing to use that influence for my benefit. I realize this explanation is vague, but that is intentional.
Thus, the question is: Do I advise the contact to say "Hey, you should really take a close look at candidate X because of X reasons" or "Hey, you should tell your recruiter to preselect candidate X for X reasons."
Even a strong suggestion would not be insulting given the contact's influence.
