over coffee: rejection?
i read on TLS that someone got an informational interview after the partner has turned down his application. so meeting up over coffee = rejection?

yes, but partners also meet up with people even though they have turned them down, am I right? I believe I have read stories here before....
I think if he considers me a good candidate, he should arrange a formal interview.

No. You sent him some information and he wants to see if you can walk and chew gum at the same time. This is why firms also have OCI screeners.Anonymous User wrote:yes, but partners also meet up with people even though they have turned them down, am I right? The rational response to such an invitation is "That's great. He got back to me, didn't reject me outright, and I can prove to him why I am a good fit at his firm."

but this is a city where I have significant ties. could it be that I sounded so eager in my email that he wanted to act nice by rejecting me and offering some 'useful' advice ?

Re: over coffee: rejection?
Ridiculous concern, and you should be ridiculed, but I won't. Look, many employers would have just ignored your email, or at best sent you a form rejection. Significant ties are not a reason to hire someone, they are just a reason to not not hire someone. Be thankful that he's meeting with you at all, push for the job, and if he is just trying to give some helpful advice then take him up on it.

I'm laughing really hard at this. Thanks.ajax adonis wrote:I don't get it. What are the alternatives here? What would you have rather had him do? He really had three options: tell you he's busy/booked and can't meet up with you; not respond to you; or ask you to meet up with him. He asked you to meet up with him. Go forth and make conversation. Would you have rather had him ask you to get lunch with him? "Ohhh, guys, I don't know if he's going to reject me. He only asked for LUNCH. I'm sure he's just trying to let me down easy or else he would've responded quicker asking me to get dinner instead. What should I do? He's probably doing this because I took PR instead of Antitrust."

I used to find this site helpful and interesting. Then I realized the same threads/conversations pop up over and over again.

tbf, it's because this forum is an endless cycle of new law students, so naturally they'll have a lot of the same questions that their predecessors had. you'd think the answers would be there for them to search, but sometimes they aren't, and sometimes the dudes are just lazy.Miller32 wrote:I used to find this site helpful and interesting. Yeah, every year people repeat the same concerns and don't search. You still pick up new information, though.Miller32 wrote:I used to find this site helpful and interesting. Then I realized the same threads/conversations pop up over and over again.

Or TLS's search function is just the worst.lolwat wrote:tbf, it's because this forum is an endless cycle of new law students, so naturally they'll have a lot of the same questions that their predecessors had. you'd think the answers would be there for them to search, but sometimes they aren't, and sometimes the dudes are just lazy.Miller32 wrote:I used to find this site helpful and interesting. that too, point being that the same questions come up because they're the same questions every new rising 1l/2l/3l will have. unavoidable given the nature of this forum.

Re: over coffee: rejection?
Agree. But it seems like every thread now is either (1) "oh shit, I'm in mildly (at best) awkward situation and am totally over-thinking it. What should I do?," or (2) here's my GPA and school, what are my chances!?!?lolwat wrote:that too, point being that the same questions come up because they're the same questions every new rising 1l/2l/3l will have. unavoidable given the nature of this forum.
Then some people act like they have a clue when they really don't, and some people post shit-eating (but sometimes entertaining) comments making fun of the OP. Eventually people start arguing about nothing. The end.
