Rising 3L--In limbo with 2L summer firm

I haven't seen this pop up on here before and I would appreciate any insights.
I am a rising 3L who had a summer associate position in a secondary market. My firm has basically told me that they cannot currently give me an offer, but that if something opens up they will. They said that they will be more than willing to give me a strong recommendation to any employer that I apply to and that I had excellent work product.
I'm at a top 10 but I have terrible grades (bottom 10 percent).

This seems important.

yea, but let's be real, with bottom 10% grades no one's really gonna think OP is trying to trade up. a cold offer would be ideal, of course, but it's probably not gonna make or break him given that he has a solid reference.
mostly just start hustling your balls off, man.

Actually you are right. Bottom 10% grades probably means 3L oci isn't happening even with a cold offer. Better start mass mailing.

OP sorry to hear about your situation but can I ask how you got your summer job? I'm a rising 2L at T10 with grades that are likely similar..

Hustling like mad. Sending out resumes to every firm in my home market, applying to jobs on my school's resume drop box, bidding at OCI, and job fairs. Basically EVERYTHING.

Thanks. What's the difference between a "cold offer" and the firm being willing to serve as a reference for me?

Cold offer, you can act like you got an offer at your 2L firm but you want to leave that firm for personal reasons, trading up, etc...

Seems to me...
"Did you get an offer from Small Law LLP?"
"They haven't extended offers yet."
